Castelvecchio Museum, located in the center of Verona, is one of the most important and ancient of the city. It was built in 1354 by the Scaligeri family, who had been ruling the city since the 13th century. Over the centuries the castle has had various uses and in the 19th century it was converted into a museum. Today it is one of the most visited attractions in the city. The museum is made up of a complex of buildings, the most important of which is the Scaligeri castle. It has a rectangular structure with four towers at the corners and a moat that runs along the perimeter.
The interior consists of a series of halls, courtyards and terraces, which house a permanent exhibition of works of art from the Middle Ages and Renaissance. Among the works exhibited are sculptures, frescoes, paintings, arms and furnishings. Visitors to the museum can also admire the Scaligeri tombs, located in the chapel of the castle, and the archaeological collection, which includes Roman artifacts dating from the 1st century BC. The museum also houses a library and a gift shop. The Castelvecchio Museum is open every day except Mondays and holidays, and admission is free.
