- He studied in Jesuit school.
- He learned Coptic in 1633 and published the first grammar of that language in 1636.
Acheivements / Contributions :
- He did make an early study of Egyptian hieroglyphs, appropriately establishing the link between the ancient Egyptian language and the Coptic language, for which he has been called the founder of Egyptology.
- He was the most renowned of the "decipherers" between ancient and modern times and the most famous Egyptologist of his day.
- He also acknowledged the relationship between the hieratic and hieroglyphic scripts.
- In Avignon, He continued his teaching duties, as well as his researches, which now extended to local geographical and archaeological explorations, the decipherment of the hieroglyphics, and astronomical explanation.
