It has been existed on the hill from early roman period.
At present,it is a best example of a medieval fortified town.It has massive defences and the surrounding buildings, its streets and its fine Gothic cathedral.
Carcassonne is also has the lengthy restoration campaign.It was undertaken by Viollet-le-Duc, one of the founders of the modern science of conservation.
