After its completion, Hadrian’s Wall was the most expensive building project ever undertaken by Rome to that point, most likely because of the stone that had to be imported to build the fortifications.
The complex archaeological history of the Wall adds to the inbuilt problems of recording a landscape which has a bundle of four separate additive Ditch, Wall, Military Way, Vallum studded with hundreds of the separate individual sites.
Hadrian\'s Wall is outstanding in this respect and it was this factor which considered that the full corridor should be the subject of the dedicated database.
