  • Bilzingsleben is located on the northern border of the Thuringian trough , an area formed of the triassic Keuper stone.

  • Because of the local hercynian fault-line there are more wells in the area.

  • North of the Bilzingsleben are the mountains of the Kyffh user, Hainleite and Schmocke that has the Sandstone and the lime settlements.

  • The site itself is located at 1,5 km south of the village of Bilzingsleben, district Sommerda at 175 m .

  • In an ancient travertine quarry called Steinrinne. The travertines have been obtained since early modern times, the wall of the nearby town of Kindelbrock, for example, was built from this material.Fossil bones had already been found in the 16th century.
