The museum is named in his honour. It became one of the first museums in Soweto when it opened in 16 June 2002.

There's a copy of Hector Pieterson photograph hanging next to the memorial, and in the museum are photographs and television footage of that fateful day, as well as excellent exhibits on Soweto during the often-violent and tense 1970s and '80s. Around the corner is Nelson Mandela's former two-room home.

Description :

The Hector Pieterson Museum is a memorial and tribute to the memory of the late Hector Pieterson and the 1976 Soweto Uprising. Located in the heart of Soweto, the museum documents the history of the struggle for freedom and democracy in South Africa, from the early days of the struggle to the present. The museum’s permanent exhibition, “The Road to Democracy”, tells the story of the uprising and its aftermath, from the apartheid government’s declaration of a state of emergency in 1976 to Nelson Mandela’s release from prison in 1990.

The exhibition includes photographs, documents, artifacts and interactive displays, as well as a theater where visitors can watch films about the struggle. The museum also holds regular temporary exhibitions and events to commemorate important moments in South African history. It hosts seminars, workshops and lectures on topics such as the struggle for human rights, the history of the struggle, and the current state of democracy in South Africa. Visitors can also take part in educational tours and activities, such as the “Youth & Rights” tour, which focuses on the role that young people played in the struggle for democracy.
