Description :

Buduruwagala Museum is located in Wellawaya, Sri Lanka and is home to the magnificent Buduruwagala rock statues. The site was designated as a protected archaeological reserve in 1938 and is one of the most important archaeological sites in Sri Lanka. The museum is located in an area called Buduruwagala, which translates to “Rock of the Monk”, and is situated near the Tissamaharama-Wellawaya Road. The museum houses a collection of seven rock sculptures which are believed to date back to the 8th century.

The largest sculpture is a standing Buddha figure about 50 feet tall and is flanked by two smaller figures. The other sculptures include a standing Avalokitesvara, a standing Vishnu, a seated Avalokitesvara, a seated Vishnu and a seated Thara. The sculptures are cut into the rock face and are quite impressive. The sculptures are in varying states of conservation, some of which have been restored while others have been left in their original state. The museum also houses a collection of ancient artifacts and coins, as well as a library with a number of books on Sri Lankan history and culture.
