He studied philosophy at the University of Athens and in 1952 started career as professor of Classical Archeology at the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki.

His most important archaeological discovery of Tomb of Philip II Macedon at Vergina on November 8 1977. This discovery was considered as one of the most significant discoveries of the 20th century because the tomb remained untouched and a lot of invaluable items were retrieved.He was a member of the Archaeological Council (1964–1965).
