Few Egyptologists look to have a religious background, but Naville was both a Swiss Egyptologist and a Bible scholar.
He first came to Egypt in 1865, and published the myths of Horus from the temple at Edfu in 1870.
He conducted excavations in the east delta, at Abydos and mostly in the area of Deir el-Bahari on the West Bank at Luxor (ancient Thebes).
