Eugene Dubois earned world-wide fame for his discovery of Pithecanthropus erectus (later redesignated Homo erectus), or 'Java Man'.

Dubois’ fossils were the first hominid remains to be recognized as material proof for human evolution.

His findings helped give shape to the rising science of paleontology.
