John was wedded to Flavia Waters on December 27, 1924.
They made several trips together to the southwest United States and Latin America to visit different groups.
With these trips and working with the likes of William Duncan Strong, John became more and more concerned in archeology and anthropology.
In 1938 at age of 43, he started his career in anthropology.
John and Flavia travelled east so that John could learn at Columbia University. In 1939 he oversees Works Progress Administration (WPA) crews excavating Pawnee sites 25BU1 and 25BU4 in Nebraska.
This guided to his meeting of Instructor of Anthropology at the University of Nebraska, Lincoln.
