Rainer won many awards,some of them include:

• 1955-1957: Berger reigned as the Fulbright Scholar.

• 1966-1967: He was a National Aeronautics and Space Administration Fellow.

• 1966-1968: National Science Foundation Fellow

• 1968- Rainer received the Distinguished Service Award at UCLA.

• He received his last award in 1969 when he ended his reign of the Guggenheim Fellow.
