{"id":57,"date":"2008-11-04T21:48:50","date_gmt":"2008-11-04T21:48:50","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.greatarchaeology.com\/news\/?p=57"},"modified":"2009-02-18T05:15:42","modified_gmt":"2009-02-18T05:15:42","slug":"underwater-egyptian-museum-underway","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.greatarchaeology.com\/news\/2008\/11\/underwater-egyptian-museum-underway\/","title":{"rendered":"Underwater Egyptian Museum Underway:"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A team from the European Underwater Archeology Institute is carrying out a study to determine the best way to build Egypt&#8217;s first underwater antiquities museum, an official source said.<\/p>\n<p>According to a press release from Egypt&#8217;s Supreme Council of Antiquities (SCA), experts are studying the best way to build the museum, which will treasure underwater relics on Alexandria&#8217;s Mediterranean coast.<\/p>\n<p>SCA Secretary General Zahi Hawass explained that the research is being carried out under supervision from UNESCO authorities, who have already chosen the museum&#8217;s design, created by French architect Jacques Rougerie.<\/p>\n<p>SCA sources noted that the underwater structure would consist of a network of Plexiglas tunnels to resist the water&#8217;s pressure and winds, so that visitors can observe the antiquities in their original sites.<\/p>\n<p>Among the objects to be exhibited at the museum are artifacts from the Pharaonic and Greco-Roman periods (341 BC-395 AC), as well as the remains of warships, including some used by Napoleon Bonaparte.<\/p>\n<p>The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO) has given its backing to ambitious plans to create an underwater archaeological museum near the remains of Cleopatra\u2019s palace in<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft\" style=\"float: left;\" src=\"http:\/\/www.greatarchaeology.com\/images\/alexandria_461.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"207\" height=\"207\" \/> the port of Alexandria on Egypt\u2019s Mediterranean coast.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A team from the European Underwater Archeology Institute is carrying out a study to determine the best way to build Egypt&#8217;s first underwater antiquities museum, an official source said.
