{"id":56,"date":"2008-11-01T15:08:33","date_gmt":"2008-11-01T15:08:33","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.greatarchaeology.com\/news\/?p=56"},"modified":"2009-02-18T05:16:27","modified_gmt":"2009-02-18T05:16:27","slug":"clue-to-medieval-church-uncovered","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.greatarchaeology.com\/news\/2008\/11\/clue-to-medieval-church-uncovered\/","title":{"rendered":"Clue to medieval church uncovered"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Archaeologists have found a carved sandstone fragment believed to be part of a medieval church in Ross-shire.<\/p>\n<p>Highland Archaeological Services said the piece provided a link between an 8th Century monastery and 17th Century church at Tarbat, Portmahomack.<\/p>\n<p>The remains were uncovered during Scottish Water&#8217;s \u00a33m project to replace mains pipes in the area.<\/p>\n<p>The fragment is part of a column decorated in gothic style and could date back to the 14th Century.<\/p>\n<p>Archaeologist Cait McCullagh said: &#8220;We believe it is a very important discovery.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;As far as we know, no other elements of the structure of a later medieval church on this site, dedicated to St Colman, have been found.&#8221; <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft\" style=\"float: left;\" src=\"http:\/\/www.greatarchaeology.com\/images\/modi.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"304\" height=\"170\" \/><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Archaeologists have found a carved sandstone fragment believed to be part of a medieval church in Ross-shire.
