The WWWorld of Archaeology
The environmental laboratory was established in 1980. It is run by Dr Charlotte O'Brien who has a doctorate in palaeoecology and over 8 years experience in the analysis of plant remains from sites in the UK and abroad.

Most of the archeological discoveries listed below had significance for the development of archaeology as a discipline and added to human knowledge. However, some such discoveries may later have their meaning reassessed in the context of later discoveries

The Royal House and Slave Quarters
The Royally House and Slave Quarters were built in 1732-1739. The House is one of the finest 18th century buildings in New England; the Slave Quarters is the only such structure in the Northern United States.

Abingdon Area Archaeological and Historical Society
Visits are arranged during the summer to exhibitions and places of interest, typically in the evening or at a weekend, and using members' cars (lifts can be arranged). The Visits are sometimes related to our lecture program, for example a visit to Silchester, and a talk on the Roman town.

The Society was founded in 1871 and for over 100 years has encouraged and supported archaeological activities in Berkshire. Everybody with an interest in archaeology is welcome to attend our meetings and join the Society. It does not matter whether your interest in archaeology is new found or long standing.
