Wadi Al-Hitan, Whale Valley, in the Western Desert of Egypt, consists of precious fossil remains of the most primitive, and now extinct, suborder of whales, Archaeoceti.

These fossils symbolize one of the most important stories of evolution: the appearance of the whale as an ocean-going mammal from an earlier life as a land-based animal.

This is the most significant site in the world for the manifestation of this stage of evolution.
