It was a major place of the Hanseatic League, deriving its prosperity in the 13th–15th centuries from the trade with central and eastern Europe.
The urban fabric of its medieval centre shows this prosperity and most of its earliest buildings were destructed by fire or war.
In the 19th century,it became an important economic centre. It is generally recognized as the finest collection of art nouveau architecture in Europe.
